Sunday, June 5, 2011, 10:00 AM: “Spirituality in the conifers, holiness in the tall grass,” at the Arboretum. An occasional outdoor walk, in this case to the Arboretum for a hour and a half guided tour. The walk will be rain or shine (we have reserved three tour guides so, if it rains, those who want to can dress appropriately and go on a rain walk, and those who prefer not to, can have their guided tour with slides inside the Arboretum Visitor's Center). The walk will not be strenuous and the path accommodates canes, walkers and wheel chairs, but again, we can always dedicate one of the guides to provide an indoor tour with slides, depending upon whom comes and their desires that Sunday. The topic on June 5th will be a comparison of the three different ecological communities at the Arboretum – forest, wetland and prairie, and the characteristics of their inhabitants. Meet at 10:00 to the Visitor’s Center, 1207 Seminole Highway (there is a google map at http://goo.gl/maps/PH1G).
Sunday, June 12, 2011, 10:00 AM: "Hail Poetry: A Tribute to Barbara Rames," presented by Kathy Converse, Anne Pryor, Orange Schroeder. Former Prairie member Barbara Weir Rames used poetry to reflect on all aspects of life, and especially nature. During her years in Madison, Barbara lovingly tended to the Prairie yard and flowers. She enriched our Prairie community through many spontaneous heartfelt recitations of poetry. Barbara died on September 2, 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she lived with her sons and their families. This service will celebrate her life by focusing on inspiring and fun poetry.
Sunday, Jun 19, 2011, 10:00 AM: "Collective Bargaining for Government Workers in Wisconsin: The Challenge of Democracy in the Workplace," presented by Howard Bellman. Unitarian Universalists cannot ignore the spotlight that has been turned upon the tension surrounding union rights and activities, particularly in the public sector. What role do unions play in the workplace and how do we decide where we stand individually as individual UUs? Mediator Howard Bellman will provide a review of the history of unionism by Wisconsin public employees, with emphasis on its driving principles, conceptual challenges; and a foundation for the discussion of a proper future for democracy in the public workplace.
Sunday, June 26, 2011, 10:00 AM: "Mindfulness & Social Justice in Our Daily Lives," presented by Cheri Maples. Cheri will explore the transforming power of Mindfulness not only on our personal journey, but our collective journeys as well. She will discuss how to maintain an open heart and healthy boundaries while working for social justice.
News & Announcements
President's Corner: Please welcome Dan Klock as our new Prairie Administrator. He joined our staff at the beginning of last week and is currently being trained by Kate to take over her duties. Kate will be working with him until June 10th. Both of their schedules will be posted every Monday.
I have one special request to make. Since Dan is Christina Klock's brother, it will be tempting to give her messages or items for Dan when you see her on Sunday. PLEASE do not use Christina as a go-between. Contact Dan directly for all of "your administrator needs". Thank you for respecting this request and give Dan a big welcome when you see him.
New to Prairie? We're scheduling 3 sessions of small group participation for new members and others to discuss our mutual beliefs and as introduction to Prairie Society. We hope to hold these sessions between the dates of June 1 and 15 at times convenient for everyone. If you would like to attend, please contact Rick Ruecking at 838-8540 or schedule at Doodle – http://www.doodle.com/rvcia7z76sr2k7mh#calendar
