Few of us have heard of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, the leading Black poet of the 19th century, a novelist and essayist, a fighter for abolition, temperance and women’s suffrage. She chose to join the Unitarian church as an adult because it supported her aspirations for the country. The first full biography of this important figure has just been published to help us uncover her story.
